Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to contest specific calls made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
