Trump's Progressive Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Technological Stagnation.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of Europe. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective is based on a fundamental misinterpretation of the reality. The true danger confronting the EU is not cultural but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Economic Divide Separating Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a stark contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, compared to a mere thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are American, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech dominance is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over $10bn, compared with just 14 in the European continent.

This gap prompts a pressing issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Innovation Gap

A number of key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In some EU nations, a startup's collapse was once met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major changes.

Given appropriate policies and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths could support far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier labs. Alongside a large internal market and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a new wave of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly boost economic output by implementing and tailoring innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's technological decline has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its structural weaknesses, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
