Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to recognize unsung work and fill the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room for numerous titles.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything that year
- A different innovative game received no nominations that year
- Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Significance of Puzzle Games
Commonly they're modest productions, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
And to reiterate, these represent titles that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
