A minimum of 13 passengers perish and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The leader announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Safety Concerns

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked persistent questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the head of a key rival party urged an prompt pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the situation "demands swift accountability."

In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
